On June 21st, I made the difficult decision to stop my Around the World Ride after experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion during the record-breaking heatwave across Europe.
The heat was unlike anything I had encountered in years of riding. Across France, temperatures exceeded previous records in some regions, and local authorities cancelled or restricted many outdoor activities because of the dangerous conditions.
As our team looked ahead, the forecast showed little relief. The extreme heat was expected to continue eastward along much of my planned route through Europe and into Central Asia, including Kazakhstan. Continuing would have meant riding directly into another prolonged period of dangerous temperatures.
My goal was always to ride as hard as I could while making responsible decisions for my long-term health and safety. While ending the ride was heartbreaking, it was the right decision.
